What is Quantum Technology?

Scroll Down100%

Quantum technology is expected to transform industries, economies and society. By harnessing the principles of quantum physics, it opens new possibilities beyond the capabilities of today's technologies.

Around the world, governments, companies and research institutions are investing heavily in quantum technologies. While many applications are still emerging, the coming decade is expected to be critical in translating scientific breakthroughs into real-world impact.

Understandably, not everyone has a clear picture of what quantum is - even the scientific community is still exploring everything quantum can offer. Below, you can find an introduction to quantum principles and explore other resources to help build up your knowledge.

Quantum technology 101

Quantum technology is based on quantum mechanics, the branch of physics that describes how nature behaves at the smallest scales. Unlike classical physics, which governs our everyday world, quantum mechanics reveals behaviours that can seem counterintuitive but have been repeatedly demonstrated through scientific research. Scientists often study this by exploring interactions between the smallest particles, including atoms, electrons, and photons.

Researchers and engineers are now learning how to harness unique quantum effects and interactions to develop entirely new technologies. The most important of these interactions include:

  • Superposition, which allows quantum systems to exist in multiple states at the same time.

  • Entanglement, which creates strong correlations between quantum particles, even when separated by large distances.

  • Quantum measurement effects, which enable extremely precise sensing and measurement

A global quantum leader: The Netherlands

The Netherlands has built a strong international position in quantum technology through decades of world-class research, a growing number of pioneering companies and a highly connected innovation ecosystem.

Today, Dutch researchers, entrepreneurs and industry leaders are working at the forefront of quantum computing, quantum communication and quantum sensing. This gives the Netherlands a unique opportunity not only to contribute to scientific progress, but also to develop the companies, talent and infrastructure that will shape the future quantum economy.
