
QDNL Visitor's Programme Spotlight: QDiamond26 workshop in Oegstgeest
QDiamond is a series of focused workshops dedicated to quantum science and technology with diamond. From 14–18 June 2026, the latest edition took place in Oegstgeest, bringing together 28 leading international scientists working on diamond-based quantum sensing, simulation, and information technologies.
Hosted by the Department of Quantum Nanoscience and the QuTech Institute of TU Delft, the workshop’s programme provided the perfect opportunity to exchange ideas and research successes, and to increase international collaboration in the field of diamond-based quantum sensing.
Education from world-leading experts on quantum sensing with diamond spins
Sessions explored the use of nanodiamonds as non-invasive sensors for biological and biomedical applications, including techniques for creating hyperpolarised nuclear spin baths that could be used for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) with enhanced contrast. Attending researchers also demonstrated how spin-based quantum sensors are enabling magnetic imaging at the micro- and nanoscale, rapidly providing new insights into atomically thin magnetic materials. Emerging research on spin defects in boron nitride illustrated the potential of new sensing platforms.
In addition to the focus on quantum sensing, the programme included talks on advances in quantum computing, quantum networking, and the interaction between quantum systems and their environments – connecting the workshop to all three of QDNL’s catalyst programmes.
Expanding research connections and growing the network
In addition to the robust scientific programme, the workshop added value beyond the planned sessions. The intimate group size encouraged open dialogue between early-career and senior researchers, with participants sharing both published results and early-stage ideas. Dedicated time for questions and discussion generated impactful exchanges and conversations on opportunities to strengthen quantum science and technology across Europe.
