Centre for Quantum and Society

Aligning societal readiness with technological readiness.

What is the Centre for Quantum and Society?

The Centre for Quantum & Society (CQS) is QDNL’s programme for Societal Readiness: preparing society for the opportunities, questions, and choices that come with integrating and using quantum technologies in real-world applications.

CQS exists to better understand the societal impacts of quantum technologies as they evolve and to educate the broader community on the importance of responsibly integrating those technologies into society.

Through research initiatives, events, and targeted resources on quantum and society, CQS helps ensure that quantum technologies create long-term public value.

What we do

Research on quantum and society

Together with research groups at Delft University of Technology, Leiden University and the University of Amsterdam, CQS studies the societal dimensions of quantum technologies, including ethics, governance, law, communication and responsible innovation.

What we do

End-user engagement

We work with governments, companies, and public organisations to explore how quantum technologies could address real-world challenges - all while considering societal implications from the start.

What we do

Public awareness and dialogue

We develop educational programmes, public dialogue initiatives, science communication activities, and interactive experiences that improve understanding of quantum technologies for diverse audiences.

What we do

International collaboration

We work with international partners to promote responsible development, exchange knowledge and contribute to global conversations on governance, education, standards and Quantum for Good.

What we do

Tools and capacity building

We develop practical frameworks and methods, such as the Exploratory Quantum Technology Assessment (EQTA), to help researchers, innovators and policymakers anticipate opportunities, risks and governance questions.

Want to work with us?

Are you exploring how quantum technologies could impact your organisation, sector or policy area? QDNL and the Centre for Quantum & Society can help you understand the opportunities and responsibilities involved in integrating quantum technologies into your programme and processes

Our Initiatives

Exploratory Quantum Technology Assessment

A practical method to explore societal opportunities, risks and governance questions.

The EQTA quick scan helped us to better understand our first quantum computing project from a broader societal perspective. The approach yielded insights that we will take to our vision on quantum and inspires us on how we can approach other digital innovations in a socially responsible manner.

Quantum for Good

Connecting quantum innovation to societal challenges and public value.

Events

Caring about quantum technology’s energy footprint

Quantum computers promise to solve problems classical machines can't — but what's the energy cost of getting there? The Centre for Quantum and Society and the Quantum Energy Initiative are bringing the community together in Delft to tackle quantum computing's own energy footprint head-on.
